In the year 2000, soon after the development of electronic
trading, three national stock exchanges took a leap into
the unknown, joining together to create the first crossborder
exchange in Europe. From this ambitious beginning,
Euronext was created, and has gone on to become
Europe's leading market infrastructure.
After its pioneering start, the company encountered bold
successes as well as significant challenges, including a
changing regulatory landscape, aggressive competition and
a difficult economic environment. These diverse challenges
have played a crucial role in shaping both the history and
culture of Euronext, just as much as the company's major
achievements.
In 2014 Euronext was reborn as a standalone company,
and listed once again on its own markets. Since then,
the company has strategically pursued acquisitions to
strengthen its position, adding new markets, building up a
strong CSD network and creating a new European clearing
house. With a market capitalisation now seven times higher
than at its IPO in 2014, diversification into new asset classes
and revenue sources, and significant growth in post-trade
activities, Euronext is now the leading listing and trading
venue in Europe and is able to manage the entire capital
markets value chain.
Inextricably linked to the European project, the creation
of Euronext is based on a vision of harmonised European
capital markets, with European roots and global ambitions
to shape capital markets for future generations.
