The quiet was a hammer blow to Elara's skull. It vibrated in her bones, hummed in the empty spaces where laughter, or more often, arguments, used to echo. This wasn't the gentle, comforting quiet of a house at rest. This was the deafening silence of absence, a vast, gaping hole that swallowed every sound, every stray thought, every unspoken word. Her father's house, once a fortress of familiar noises – the clang of pots, the low murmur of the television, his heavy footsteps – was now a tomb. A monument to what was, and what would never be again.
She stood in the hallway, her hand still hovering over the doorknob, as if letting go would sever the last fragile tether to a world where he was still in it. The air was thick with the scent of old wood, dust motes dancing in the faint light filtering through the drawn blinds, and something else – something uniquely his. A faint smell of aftershave, tobacco from pipes long since retired, and that distinctive, earthy scent of old books. It clung to the fabric of the furniture, seeped into the very walls, a ghostly embrace that tightened around her chest, making it hard to breathe.
