Adehl immediately wishes she'd delivered her horses and kept on riding. Roh is vibrant and magnetic, his soaring affinity for ellir impossible to resist. But he's also in training to lead the nomadic Vuusah: if he discovers Adehl's tainted blood, his brethren will quell her energy and destroy her empathic gifts forever.

Roh, entranced by the fascinating horse empathiser whose energy cleaves to his, defies orders to keep his distance and affirms their bond. Neither can deny their soul-deep connection, and soon the Vuusah are probing Adehl's background, discovering her lies and demanding retribution.

From sweeping grasslands to an ancient harbour city, Adehl and Roh discover new truths and allies and foes, all exposing unjust Vuusah lore. While Roh wrestles with his loyalties, Adehl embarks on a path of secret rebellion.

But as the Vuusah close in, Adehl must choose: risk her life and Roh's for the chance to forge a more inclusive future… or betray her conscience to save herself?
