She thought her husband was cheating. The truth was so much worse.
For ten years, Claire built the perfect suburban life, with the house and the lake and the quiet, gentle husband who could never lie to her face.
Then Danny started sneaking out at night. Tuesdays and Thursdays, always after midnight, always home before three, slipping into the shower in the dark before he would dare touch their bed.
Claire told herself it was another woman, and she built that woman in her head for three weeks, lying awake while her husband vanished into the night.
So one night, she followed him.
Forty minutes east, back toward the hometown they had clawed their way out of, into the worst part of a city they swore they would never see again, to a dead, abandoned parking lot where her husband parked in the dark and waited. Claire killed her headlights and watched from across the street, certain she was finally about to meet the other woman.
She was wrong about everything.
The car door opened, and a man stepped out, a man Claire knew, a man she had spent eighteen years trying to forget. He was the one who had made her husband's college years a living hell, the powerful, magnetic Black man who had ruled that campus like he owned it and everyone on it. He was older now, harder, just out of prison and twice as dangerous.
And her husband walked straight up to him and sank to his knees in the dirt.
In one shattering moment, Claire understood all of it: the lies and the showers and the cold half of the bed. Her gentle suburban husband had a whole secret life out here in the dark, a hunger he had been hiding since long before she ever met him, and a man he had been crawling back to for years.
She should have run. She should have driven home and never looked back. Instead, she got out of the car.
Because the worst discovery of that night turned out to be her own. Kneeling in the cold beside her husband, Claire felt some buried part of her wake up and want it too.
What happens in that parking lot will burn Claire's old life to the ground, and what she carries home will change their marriage forever.
