Short of winning the lottery, inheriting a fortune, or stumbling across a big bag of small, unmarked bills in the desert, most of us must work for a living in order to have what we need and want our lives to include.

Are you fortunate enough to pursue work that you love and that fills you with a sense of purpose? Does your work enable you to do the things that you enjoy doing so much that you lose track of time? We've all heard some version of "love what you do and do what you love." Popular belief would have us believe that we have somehow come up short if we aren't doing what we love, not living the life of our dreams, not working in jobs that we are completely and absolutely passionate about, that meet all of our heart's desires, and are entirely in our best and highest interest.

Certainly, this is nice work if you can get it, you know what it is, and you're in a position to go after it. But for many of us, we are unable or unwilling to pursue our ideal job. Or we may not know exactly what we'd love to do, but we know on some level that it doesn't exist in our current work situation.

Which is not to say that we can't find satisfying, meaningful, or fulfilling work. We simply need to figure out what "ideal work" means for us.

The focus of this book is on taking stock in order to make informed choices about the kind of work you must have, you would like to have, or you are even willing to do. To know what you seek and determine how to get there, you must understand where you are now and recognize or reaffirm what you already know about yourself. Because those without a clear idea of what they're doing and why they're doing it will not have the foundation to keep going in the face of change or challenge.

During this self-assessment, you'll examine your present circumstances; your needs and wants; your Authentic Self; what you're willing and unwilling to do; what matters most to you; your ability to handle change; and your fears. Completing this self-assessment will form the foundation of your quest for finding satisfying work – no matter what that work is!

Regardless of what kind of job you're doing now or what you may do in the future, regardless of whether you've found your purpose in life or you're still looking for it, it will be much easier to show up and do the work when you know that what is most important to you is being addressed.

Because you can, in fact, learn to love what you do even when you can't do what you love!
