''Clean Break'' is a seminal 1955 hard-boiled pulp noir novel written by American crime reporter turned author Lionel White. Widely considered a masterpiece of the "big caper" subgenre, it revolutionized crime fiction with its non-linear, multi-perspective narrative structure. The story follows Johnny Clay, a meticulous ex-convict who plans a foolproof, multi-million-dollar heist at a major Long Island racetrack during its busiest racing day. To keep the police off his scent, Clay recruits a team of ordinary, desperate citizens with no criminal records but heavy financial troubles. The plan executes perfectly like clockwork, involving synchronized diversions including the targeted shooting of a favorite racehorse. However, the flawless plan spirals out of control due to basic human error, greed, and a fatal leak by one of the members to the wrong person. The novel is most famous for catching the eye of legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick adapted it into his landmark 1956 film noir classic, The Killing, starring Sterling Hayden. Because of the film's massive success, subsequent printings of White's book are frequently titled The Killing. Decades later, director Quentin Tarantino also cited Lionel White's complex heist formats as a core inspiration for his debut film, Reservoir Dogs.
