Two animals of the same species, same age, same habitat. Release them together and one lives. The other does not. Species, anatomy, and landscape will not tell you which.
In 1963 Niko Tinbergen gave ethology four questions that still organize the field. They are necessary. They are not sufficient. All four start with a behavior and work outward. None of them asks about the animal that produces it.
Configuration names that missing question and answers it with five components: body, personality, beliefs, emotions, and instincts. The argument is built on three research programs, not slogans. Harlow's isolation-reared monkeys never built the social architecture their developmental windows were meant to install. Snyder's thick-billed parrots were built thoroughly—and for captivity—then asked to survive in Arizona forest. In 2022, six blue-and-yellow macaws were configured for the destination while those windows were still open. All six survived the first year and were still alive four years later.
Same vertebrate architecture. Three configurations. Three outcomes. Once the inventory can be read, the results stop looking like luck.
Written for trainers, conservationists, and anyone who was taught the four questions and suspected something prior had been left out. No prior volume in the series is required.
