Crystal Ice: New Zealand Gangs, Drugs and Terrorism.

Crystal Ice, set primarily in New Zealand, follows the rise and unravelling of a sophisticated criminal empire built by two outwardly respectable Muslim brothers, owners of a thriving Brazilian restaurant on Auckland's Viaduct Harbour. While their restaurant appears to be a bustling success catering to tourists and locals, it is in fact the front for a clandestine methamphetamine operation on a rural farm near Runciman, south of Auckland. This "money mine" finances something far more sinister: the development of a genetically engineered variant of the 1918 Spanish flu, transformed into a weaponised virus with the capacity to trigger a catastrophic global pandemic. 

When this engineered influenza is released, it spreads relentlessly across the north-eastern United States. The narrative shifts to the front lines of the American response, profiling the scientists at USAMRIID as they race to identify the pathogen, trace its source, and mount a defence. Through these characters, the book explores the human cost of the outbreak—families shattered by sudden loss, medical systems pushed to breaking point, and a nation facing the mounting economic fallout as trade, travel, and daily life are upended. 

Back in Auckland, the brothers' meth empire relies on the "Skorpions," a local motorcycle gang whose distribution network saturates New Zealand with "crystal ice." Their mutually profitable alliance depends on the brothers successfully smuggling in precursor chemicals and taking 60 per cent of the enormous profits. When one Skorpion co-leader attempts to skim money, the brothers retaliate with ruthless efficiency, executing him in a brutal act that becomes the spark for a chain reaction of violence, suspicion, and betrayal that threatens to topple the entire operation. 

Running parallel to this power struggle is the story of a young, inexperienced New Zealand Customs officer. Initially sifting through small, easily overlooked irregularities, he slowly pieces together a pattern that links the Croatian restaurateurs, the Skorpions' drug network, and the shadowy terrorist cell behind the viral release. As he closes in on the truth, these converging threads drive the narrative toward a high-stakes confrontation where organised crime, bioterrorism, and global security collide.
