Thomas Kafando slew the Earth's last billionaire and became the most famous hero on Earth. To escape his fame he joined Project Gagarin, a shared scientific mission between the peoples of Earth and Mars to discover intelligent alien life. He was elected chairman of that first mission.
Starship Gagarin's first goal is to investigate anomalies not explained by modern physics, and to that end they find the ruins of a doomed impossible planet. Clues on that graveyard world lead them back to Kwegaigh, a divided planet with two warring societies: the technologically advanced Tuariskeagn, starbound exiles who believe Kwegaigh is their mythic ancestral home; and the indigenous Santosians, a once peace-loving people forced to the brink of existence by their new neighbors.
Lucy Drummond was rescued by Kafando from the last climate bunker and wants to live up to his legend. After an attempt to return survivors from the graveyard world back home goes awry Lucy is forced to find a way through the fighting and off the planet. Gagarin is drawn into the planetary conflict, and many of their crew taken hostage.
The Starship Venture, a diplomatic ship from the Union of Sovereign Planets and vastly more technologically advanced than either the humans or the Tuariskeagn, arrives to assist. But what is their agenda? And why do they seem to be helping the Tuariskeagn? Why do the Tuariskeagn keep lying to Kafando?
Can the crew of Gagarin figure out what's going on? Can they rescue their lost crew? Or will they be drawn into a conflict they can't possibly hope to end.
