Rachel Maddison has learned that pride is easier to keep than security. After her mother's death leaves her almost penniless, she accepts a temporary post as companion to Lady Eleanor Fallows at Dunmorrow Hall, a remote Scottish house above Lochmara Bay.
She expects difficult weather, an elderly employer, and a month of quiet work. She does not expect Luke Fallows.
Cold, controlled, and deeply suspicious, Luke believes his aunt has been too trusting. To him, Rachel is a stranger who has arrived at the door with a battered suitcase, a carefully composed face, and perhaps an interest in more than employment. Rachel has no intention of being dismissed as a fortune-hunter, even by a man whose nearness unsettles her more than his accusations.
But Dunmorrow Hall is a house of old griefs and locked rooms. As storms cut the estate off from the outside world and Lady Eleanor quietly manoeuvres them into one another's path, Rachel begins to see the fear beneath Luke's severity. Luke, in turn, is forced to confront the courage beneath Rachel's pride.
In a place where every closed door seems to guard a secret, trust may be the one thing neither of them can afford to offer — and the only thing that can save them.
