Some advanced Earthlings became aware that the planet was encased in ice. They investigated it. Penetrating it caused a problem with the ice melting and flooding the planet. They became aware of Mars and some of them decided to escape the flood by going to Mars.
They made trips back to Earth, saw not all humanity died in the flood, and began to monitor their progress, also keeping in contact with the relatives who didn't go to Mars and were living underground in Antarctica.
When Earth went through a mini ice age during the 1800s, Mars also got quite cold so they moved their populace to pyramids on the back side of the moon. When the state of humanity didn't look good in the 21st century, they sent more monitors. It was obvious that humanity was on its way to kill itself. What ought they do?
