In the psychological thriller "Extreme Measures" by Lyubomir Nikolov, the boundaries between life, death, and personal identity are pushed to their breaking point.
The story follows Aleksi Voronov, a former martial arts sensei and seeker of "pure truth" who has retreated to a remote island to escape the chaos of the modern world. His quiet life is upended when a researcher named Nadya arrives at his doorstep. Their brief, intense connection is tragically interrupted when Nadya falls into an inexplicable, deep coma.
As Voronov cares for the unresponsive Nadya, a medical miracle—or nightmare—unfolds: despite her coma, she is pregnant. Desperate to save her and their unborn child, Voronov turns to Leonid Leviev, a world-renowned surgeon and "luminary" of organ transplantation with a reputation for "assembling and disassembling" people.
The narrative takes a dark, speculative turn as Voronov himself suffers a near-fatal accident. He wakes up in Leviev's elite clinic to a horrifying realization: he has been "reconstructed". His body is now a patchwork of organs from various donors—a docker, a fisherman, even a criminal—each bringing fragments of their own memories and impulses into his consciousness.
While their daughter, Alba, is born healthy—a "miracle child" who seems preternaturally wise—Voronov must navigate a fractured existence. He is no longer a single "I" but a collection of "subordinates" fighting for control of his limbs and mind.
