Jacob Symes has been raising his only child, Bess, since her mother died five years earlier. Everywhere they've gone, prejudice has crept up on them in the form of unkindness from others. In other people's eyes, a daughter being raised only by a father is simply unacceptable.
Finally accepting an invitation to go and live with his wife's brother in Montana, Jacob resolves that this will be the last time he moves his daughter around. She's now almost 18 years old. He knows he cannot forever protect her from the unkind people of the world.
Settling into a new life in a new place, Bess thrives. She and her father become well liked and respected by most people they meet. To others, however, Bess's independent thinking and open mind isn't liked or appreciated. Some people they meet will have plans for Bess, being a young woman entering an ideal age for marriage. Others will have plans for Jacob, being a widower who must be in search of a new wife.
