He was not only a folk singer and bluesman, a singer of cow-boy ballads and the occasional lullaby; he was also a multi-instrumentalist with a phenomenal memory who single-handedly made the 12-string guitar popular the world over. Together with Woody Guthrie, he remains the main inspiration behind the folk trend that spread through American campuses in the Sixties to touch Bob Dylan and Trini Lopez in America, The Beatles and Lonnie Donegan in England.
