Two weeks after the announcement, Elliot Reeves is Senior-something in his head and Elliot-something in every room. He asked for two analysts. The answer was existing bench: a leftover intern and a plant in the corner. Helen Cho thinks he has a team. Derek Lang talks about dust settling. Martin Hale is testing whether Zara still knows where his door is.
She does.
Zara Reeves will not leave a sample on the counter. Staffing approved before anything comes off. Principal language drafted before the dress hits the floor. One night at the Thompson. Terms, not loneliness. She feeds her husband first. She sends the emails from Hale's own machine. Then she clocks in as the other woman for an hour and clocks out as a wife who makes better tea than Elliot's mother ever taught her to.
The three weeks that follow are almost cruel in how ordinary they are: onboarding panic, too much mint, a neighbor's baby who spat on Elliot's collar, a text from Hale that she turns face down on the stove. Briggs calls on a Saturday and wants a clean story. She will not give him one. Clean is not the same as fair.
Monday is the panel. Zara stays in the kitchen with keema and the lucky blue shirt. Elliot comes home with drooping subway flowers and a title that still scares him. She will not rob him of the work he did. She will not pretend the air around that work appeared by accident.
This is the second part of For Us. It is a contemporary erotic short story about paying the rest of the price and shutting the shop.
