A Novel of Memory, Foreknowledge, and the Choices That Remain

Some records preserve the past. One has already recorded the future.

Three years after the death of his wife, Ruth, senior archivist Martin Cole has built his life around order. Every document belongs in its proper place. Every memory can be examined, classified, and preserved. If the evidence is complete enough, he believes, loss can be contained.

Then, during the relocation of Harrowden Record Office, Martin discovers an unregistered typescript hidden inside a municipal collection sealed since 1992.

Its paper is modern. Its physical age is impossible. And its first page describes an event that will occur the following morning - with the exact time, location, actions, and words.

When the prediction is fulfilled without error, the manuscript becomes more than an archival anomaly. Page by page, it records the next seven weeks of Martin's life. Its clues lead toward a forgotten pneumatic dispatch shaft, Ruth's unfinished oral-history project, and private recordings that challenge everything Martin has chosen to remember about their marriage.

As the document's origin closes around him, Martin confronts an even more disturbing possibility: the manuscript was compiled in his own future hand.

But if a future version of himself selected the evidence guiding his present decisions, are those decisions still truly his?

With the Record Office facing a preventable catastrophe and the final page approaching, Martin must decide what can be preserved, what must remain private, and whether responsibility is possible when the outcome has already been written.

Because the manuscript ends with one final sentence:

At 09:17 on 18 November, Harrowden Record Office will lose Martin Cole.

Fragments Of Time: The Unfiled Hours is a literary speculative mystery about grief, memory, authorship, and the dangerous human desire to possess a complete version of the people we love.
