Luciel are back and with them an album as if from a single cast. The debut album released in 2019 was nominated for the German Record Critics' Prize almost from scratch. Then Corona came and Luciel retired to the place of her origin, to the band's own "Studio of the World". The quartet from Cologne has recorded a handful of sessions and now presents "from outside", a record that overflows with playfulness, complexity and great ideas. With the 10 varied songs, produced in-house by the band and a lyrically profound narrative power, Luciel succeeds in proving that pop music can be multifaceted and rich without losing musical lightness. "from outside" pays homage to yacht rock in some places, is deeply connected to soul jazz and shines in handmade R'nB. On the one hand, there is David Rynkowski's voice, which is just as convincing in falsetto as it is in the traditional pitches and warms hearts in its velvety recliningness. On the other hand, he is surrounded by a strikingly well-rehearsed band, consisting of Philipp Brämswig (guitar), Tim Dudek (drums) and Florian Rynkowski (bass), who give a wonderful relaxedness. The gentle swell is deceptive, because with her texts Luciel sheds light on deeper individual questions of meaning and current global problems, such as transience and status, materialism, global warming and hyperconsumption. Luciel thus create a wonderfully radiant work, which is quite vulnerable in his texts, full of details that leave enough air to breathe and the big, sonic whole always in view.
