Set in the turbulent borderlands of Zimbabwe and Mozambique during the final years of white rule and the birth of an independent Zimbabwe, Frontier Gold is a gripping historical thriller where greed, politics, and violence collide beneath the earth.

Grounded in authentic mining practice, regional history, and the brutal realities of the time, Frontier Gold plunges the reader into a world of armed insurrection and corruption, where a porous frontier breeds lawlessness and lethal mining ventures thrive beyond the reach of authority. As gold is torn from the earth and power shifts hands, the characters are forced to confront how much blood, loyalty, and conscience they are willing to trade for buried wealth.

The story follows an entrepreneurial miner and a former freedom fighter turned politician as their competing ambitions draw them into a high-stakes struggle over a rich gold deposit lying astride the border between Zimbabwe and Mozambique, where power, loyalty and survival are never clearly separated.

Franco de Menezes, a young mining engineer, stumbles upon a rich gold occurrence in a remote frontier zone near the Mozambique border during the final, violent years before Zimbabwe's independence. The discovery lies deep inside a military no-go area, seeded with anti-personnel land mines and cut off by war. Forced to walk away, Franco buries the knowledge as carefully as the ore itself, waiting years for the land to be cleared before he can return to claim what fate briefly revealed.

Once the area is cleared and reopened, Franco resigns from his post as Mine Manager with a multinational mining company and establishes a small, independent gold mining operation at his original discovery.

Ike Chikamba, a former liberation fighter who rises rapidly to become Zimbabwe's Minister of Mines, uses his political leverage to insert himself into the venture, creating a partnership marked by mistrust and imbalance.

After several years of financially rewarding production, the gold reef is proven to extend across the Mozambique border. Unwilling to mine illegally in a foreign jurisdiction, Franco insists on halting operations. Ike, however, driven by power and profit, refuses—and compels Franco to relinquish the mine entirely.

Franco is not so easily defeated. Crossing the border into Mozambique, he lawfully secures mining rights and establishes his own mining operation—only metres from Ike's mine and develops towards the same gold reef.

Now promoted to Minister of Defence, Ike is enraged. Abusing his authority, he orders an army unit to cross into Mozambique, arrest Franco, and shut the rival mine down. The illegal incursion spirals into chaos. The Mozambican government demands an explanation, and the scandal ends Ike's political career when the President summarily dismisses him.

Ruined politically and bleeding money, Ike is driven to increasingly dangerous extremes in a bid to survive.

Blending historical realism with relentless suspense, Frontier Gold explores how gold can transform lives—sometimes enriching them, often destroying them—and asks the enduring question: what is the true cost of striking it rich?
