Frozen Time tells the full story of the material behind that mystery: a fossilized tree resin, forty-five million years old, that has shaped Baltic history since long before anyone could write it down.

This is a work of narrative nonfiction that follows amber from the Eocene forests that made it, through the Neolithic beachcombers who first shaped it into beads, into the burial goods of Bronze Age Greek nobility and the gladiatorial games of Rome. It traces the Teutonic Order's brutal six-hundred-year monopoly — enforced by the gallows — and the construction of the Amber Room itself: a chamber so dazzling that eighteenth-century visitors called it the eighth wonder of the world.

From there, the book follows the room's theft by German occupying forces in 1941, its disappearance amid the ruins of Königsberg in 1945, and the four-decade Cold War manhunt that followed — a search with a body count of its own.

The final chapters move into the present day: the industrial mine in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad that now supplies most of the world's amber, the sophisticated counterfeit trade built around its reputation, the folk medicine claims that persist despite the chemistry, and amber's unexpected new role in climate science, as researchers study the insects trapped inside it to understand a warmer ancient Earth.
