Goat farming plays a crucial role in the rural economy, particularly in India, by providing a vital source of income for marginal farmers, small landholders, and landless laborers. Despite 34–40% of goats being slaughtered annually for meat, their population continues to grow rapidly due to high reproductive rates and widespread adoption across all castes, communities, and regions. Goats contribute significantly to national production—accounting for 35–38% of total meat and 3–4% of milk output. This accessibility and economic value have made goat farming an integral livelihood option, especially for unemployed youth, and have drawn increasing attention from agricultural scientists and policymakers as a sustainable rural development strategy.
