The Author's Notes, a companion piece to Half of Us, Book One is Arkeym N. Young's behind-the-scenes account of how the novel was actually constructed, passage by passage, scene by scene, character by character, chapter by chapter. Rather than a study guide or a recap, it takes readers directly inside the decisions themselves, explaining why a character moved through time the way they did, why a scene stayed explicit instead of fading to black, and even why a certain chapter never made it into the final book at all.

These notes begin with the thematic foundations of the novel, including the conscious dismantling of a "good man" archetype and the reasoning behind two pivotal sex scenes, before turning to the hardest decision the author made while writing the book. From there, the notes offer a direct defense of the women in Half of Us, addressing questions the author anticipated readers would ask before they asked them. Chapter-by-chapter notes follow, allowing access to the technique, psychology, and architecture behind the story readers already know. The collection closes with something that was never published: a full chapter written for one character, then intentionally cut, included here for the first time.
