''Harm's Way'' is the bestselling 1962 military novel written by James Bassett, a decorated World War II Navy captain who drew heavily on his personal experiences as a public relations officer for Fleet Admiral William F. "Bull" Halsey. The story revolves around Captain Rockwell "Rock" Torrey, a rigid, stoic career naval officer known for his "granite facade" and unwavering leadership. It begins in the immediate aftermath of the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, capturing the chaos and desperation of the early days of the Pacific War. Torrey is given command of a heavy cruiser nicknamed Old Swayback. He is assigned a seemingly impossible amphibious operation in the Southwestern Pacific to seize strategic islands from Japanese forces. The book's major climax, the Battle of Toko-Rotu, mirrors real-life WWII engagements like the Battle off Samar and the Solomon Islands campaign. The book is widely recognized for its high-profile 1965 film adaptation titled In Harm's Way.
