Of all her unsavory clients, Jackie is perhaps the most egregious. Unable to control her public outbursts, she insists she's misunderstood, pointing to her friend Mohammad as evidence she's a tolerant person. But Mohammad has problems of his own in this increasingly self-rebuking society. A Bangladeshi immigrant and possibly the last true believer in the American dream, he worries he may have unknowingly radicalized his daughter.

As their lives intertwine in a world of well-thought-out ideologies—where one false move could unleash a wrath of biblical proportions—this sublimely imaginative, sharply satirical novel is about good intentions gone awry and the daring lengths people will go to to assert their common humanity in a divided age.
