Biochemistry first entered my life as an academic discipline—pathways memorized, molecules traced, exams passed. Decades later, it returned as something far more intimate: a guide to healing.
This book grows out of a life spent teaching, learning, and living with science. While lecturing in college, I used songs, rhythms, and musical mnemonics to help students understand complex processes such as glycolysis and the Krebs cycle. Over the years, life's challenges included seasons of caregiving, sleepless nights, chronic pain, failing vision, and burning nerves. Then an episode of unstable angina became a turning point in my own health. I turned back to those same principles—not for grades, but for recovery. Food is broken down into molecules. Those molecules become not only fuel but also the building blocks for repair and renewal. Healing is biochemistry, expressed in daily life.
This is not a conventional textbook, nor is it a memoir alone. It invites readers to walk alongside me as I think through real health challenges—asking questions, weighing evidence, consulting healthcare professionals, learning from experience, and applying the principles of biochemistry to everyday decisions. It is a bridge between knowledge and experience, science and perseverance, the classroom and the kitchen.
Drawing on biochemistry, biology, nutrition, and lived reflection, the book explores how nourishment, rest, movement, and kindness support the body's remarkable capacity to maintain balance and repair itself. Like leaves turning sunlight into sugars, and mitochondria transforming oxygen into energy, our bodies are active participants in healing.
Set against the cultural and natural backdrop of Penang, these pages weave together health, culture, and purpose. If these reflections encourage readers to believe that renewal is possible at any age—and that health often begins with understanding, informed choices, and mindful living—then this book will have fulfilled its purpose.
