''The History of the Russian Revolution'' by Leon Trotsky is a monumental three-volume historical masterwork published in 1930 that chronicles the seismic political upheavals of 1917. It stands out uniquely in world literature because it is a rigorous, deeply analytical account written by an individual who was a primary leader and central strategist of the events themselves. Trotsky drafted the entire massive work within a year while living in political exile on the Turkish island of Prinkipo. This followed his expulsion from the Soviet Union by Joseph Stalin. To prevent the book from reading like a mere memoir, Trotsky consciously referred to himself in the third person to maintain maximum historical objectivity. The text was written partly to defend his own legacy and preserve an accurate, documentary account of 1917 against the revisionist histories being popularized by the Stalinist regime.
