The method presented in this book grew out of an eleven-month case study undertaken as part of a Master's degree in psychology, involving a 76-year-old man who had been diagnosed eight years earlier with stage III Parkinson's disease. The study began with Feuerstein's theories of Mediated Learning Experience and Structural Cognitive Modifiability. What emerged in practice, however, gradually led beyond the original research framework. In seeking a theoretical language for what had become visible in the work itself, the writings of Leontyev, Vygotsky and Galperin provided important points of connection. From this encounter between sustained practice, observation and reflection, a method began to take form—one that would later be named Mediated Reflexive Integration (MRI).
