Melusi Zwane was a teacher and then a Head of Department before he was promoted and deployed – against his preference – to Myeka High School. When a wave of student resistance reached rural areas of KwaZulu Natal, Zwane endeavoured to learn of their intentions. He then cooperated in the creation of a democratic governing structure, discovering that the parties in conflict had – for different strategic reasons – a common interest in keeping the school operational. Zwane strategically ensconced himself in the 'space of common interest' and began to manoeuvre his way back to the driver's seat.
An encounter with a local fellow at the bus stop triggered a critical reflection on historical injustices afflicting Black people, particularly concerning Black-on-Black violence affecting school learners today. While regretting the fact that institutional deprivation had reduced able-bodied people to indigence, and that many parents of school learners could not provide for their children, this depressing historical past became a source of inspiration. Zwane initiated a sustainable development project which attracted many development organisations – and turned the school into a technological hub. The technology-driven project which shown covered in different media – catapulted the school to fame. This book is about an unwavering commitment to a belief – and a believer who becomes a prisoner of his belief.
