The year is 1947, and former British Army Lieutenant, Ewan (Bluey) McConnell, has finally returned home to his parents who live In Townsville, Australia. Bluey, as he likes to be called, is at a loss about his immediate future. He's carrying some emotional baggage from his days during the war and living in Berlin helping the Germans rebuild their country
Out of the blue two Australian Army officers visit him in Townsville and within a week he is recruited as a captain in the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) and finds himself in Japan helping the Japanese people with their rebuilding programme.
Yet, as he finds out it's not that simple, as disgruntled former Japanese soldiers hatch a plan to kidnap Emperor Hirohito, return him to power and rid the occupational forces from their country by force. Several violent clashes give the reader enough action to satisfy most lovers of war stories.
Intermingled with the action is an Australian Army officer who is systematically killing innocent people to get revenge for the atrocities the Japanese Army committed during the war. Bluey is seconded into the MP ranks and he is ordered to find this murderer before he kills more innocent civilians.
To complicate his investigation a love triangle with two gorgeous women evolves, leaving him emotionally confused. Pressured from his superiors for results, he regroups and continues with his search for the serial killer.
With a number of interesting characters, the story ticks along nicely until the conclusion.
