Lanna (or Lan Na), translating to "Kingdom of a Million Rice Fields," is a historic civilization and cultural region in northern Thailand, cantered around Chiang Mai, which flourished from the 13th to the 18th century. While it was absorbed into the Siamese state (now Thailand) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Lanna retains a distinct identity in architecture, art, cuisine, and language.  Founded by King Mangrai in 1292, the capital was established in Chiang Mai in 1296. The kingdom was known for its independence but fell under Burmese rule for roughly 200 years (16th–18th century) before being liberated by King Taksin and restored by King Kawila, becoming a vassal of Siam. Lanna is renowned for its gentle and polite culture, a legacy often referred to as "Lanna style," which blends influences from the Mon (Hariphunchai), Khmer, and Tai Yuan peoples. Characterized by steep, multi-tiered roofs, intricate wood carvings, and whitewashed temples. Traditional homes often follow a "Kamphaeng Kaew" layout. Known for unique dishes influenced by mountainous terrain and neighbouring regions, such as Khao Soi (curry noodle soup), Nam Prik Ong (chili dip), and Sai Oua (northern Thai sausage), typically served in a Khan Toke set. Famous for silverwork, lacquerware, hand-woven textiles, and specifically, Lanna-style Buddha sculptures.  Today, the Lanna region spans several provinces in upper northern Thailand, including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Lamphun, Phayao, and Nan. The region is a major tourist destination for its traditional arts, mountainous landscape, and festivals like Yi Peng.  These photographs celebrate the wonderful people and culture of Lanna.
