EN - The fiftieth anniversary of artist Leo Copers is being marked by exhibitions at SMAK, BOZAR, M HKA and the Middelheim Museum and by a hefty book published by Ludion. The publication offers a survey of fifty years of artistic practice and shows how Copers searched right from the start for ways to connect seemingly incompatible elements, such as gas and fire, or water and electricity. This tension has been an essential element of Copers' work right through to the present.
Dreams are Made of This is arranged in themed sections - colour, gold, flowers, fairy tales and weapons - in an attempt to bring structure to what is an eclectic and highly diverse oeuvre. Hilde Teerlinck recorded a series of conversations with the artist that offer a personal insight into his work.
Dreams are Made of This contains a survey of an impressive career stretching over half a century (1968-2018) making it a unique historical document for that reason alone.
NL - Om de vijftigjarige carrière van kunstenaar Leo Copers te vieren, organiseren het S.M.A.K., BOZAR, M HKA en het Middelheimmuseum tentoonstellingen en verschijnt er bij Ludion een vuistdikke publicatie. Het boek geeft een overzicht van 50 jaar kunstpraktijk en toont hoe Copers van bij het begin naar manieren zocht om schijnbaar onverenigbare elementen, zoals gas en vuur, of water en elektriciteit met elkaar te verbinden. Die spanning is essentieel in Copers' oeuvre en blijft dat tot op de dag van vandaag.
Dreams are Made of This is opgedeeld in thematische hoofdstukken - kleur, goud, bloemen, sprookjes, wapens... - en poogt zo een structuur te brengen in een eclectisch en veelzijdig oeuvre. Hilde Teerlinck schreef een aantal gesprekken neer die ze met de kunstenaar voerde en die een persoonlijk inzicht geven in zijn werk.
