Purpose of Looking After Me for children from ages 3 to 6
• protect children without frightening them
• preserve innocence while increasing awareness
• support body knowledge, bodily autonomy, and consent
• empower children with language, choices, and help-seeking skills
• place responsibility on adults and systems, never on the child
• involve parents and educators actively, not passively
• recognise different family structures and alternative trusted adults
• rely on repetition and familiarity rather than once-off exposure
Key subjects that must carry through all levels:
• correct anatomical language, used age-appropriately (to know their 'Private Parts' by actual names/words)
• clear distinction between safe/unsafe touch and safe/unsafe talking (precautions to take if something happens to their Private Parts other than what is meant at their age regardless of who is doing that to them be it a family member, a stranger, other children or a teacher)
• recognition that unsafe situations can involve familiar people, not only strangers
• the "Personalised Shield" concept as a unifying metaphor across levels
• emphasis on instinct, feelings, body signals, and discomfort as warning signs
• multiple pathways to disclosure - speaking, signalling, recording, writing
• practical scenario-based participation, not only listening
• an end-of-book activity led by parents/educators for consolidation
Each level will have activities with examples of scenarios and children will have opportunities to come up with some activities and act on different scenarios.
Activities must also include parents at home and not just teachers. Teachers and parents must establish if children have family members they trust at home to confide to. If not, who could be the alternative?
Keeping secrets is covered during the series, as well as good and bad touching, and good and bad talking. It is very important for teachers and parents to observe body language during these activities to establish if some of the children are uneasy and to pay attention to visible signs.
Children will also be taught not to accept any edible things or consume them without asking parents/teachers first.
Programme Curriculum Level 1
Ages 3–6 (Preschool / Early Childhood Development)
Core developmental reality
Children at this age
• think concretely
• rely entirely on trusted adults
• have limited cause-and-effect reasoning
• learn best through repetition, songs, pictures, routine
• should not be given responsibility for protecting themselves – only participating in safety
Primary purpose of Level 1
Introduce body ownership and safety in a way that
• preserves innocence
• builds vocabulary
• creates familiarity, not fear
What Level 1 should focus on
Body awareness
• naming main body parts
• knowing private parts by correct names
• understanding that bodies are special and worth caring for
Private parts
• private parts are the parts covered by underwear/swimsuits
• clear rule: private parts are private
Touch
• good/safe touch vs bad/unsafe touch
• emphasis on feelings, not behaviour labels
• "if it feels yucky or scary, it's not safe"
Talking
• Good/safe talking vs bad/unsafe talking
• emphasis on feelings, not behaviour labels
• "if it feels scary, it's not safe"
Feelings as signals
• tummy feels funny
• scared, confused, worried feelings
Very simple action steps
• say no, stop
• go away
• tell a grown-up
Trusted adults
• grown-ups who help and protect
• repetition that telling is safe
Shield metaphor
• shield = words (No, Stop), get away, telling
• shield belongs to the child but is backed by adults
