He told himself he hired Gianna because she was good at the work. Twenty-three, just out of school, no performance in the way she dressed, the kind of quiet competence that made the rest of the floor forget to look. She learned fast. She stayed late because she wanted the job done right. On the drives home she talked when she felt like talking, and when she was finished with the man who kept circling back, she ended it herself.
He noticed her. That part is true. What he did not expect was how little of it she left in his hands.
She was the one who started taking up space. The haircut. The clothes that fit. The look across a table that did not ask permission. She let him come along when she bought the shoes. She kissed him in the car like she had already decided what his mouth would feel like. When he started writing a story in his head, she told him not to get ahead of her. She did not tell him to stop.
Friday, she came downstairs in a dress that made the movie look like cover. The office emptied and she did not go home. She opened the box. She put the things on because she wanted to see his face when she did. She asked if he wanted to see her properly, and she waited for the answer she already intended to use.
What follows is not a man talking a girl into the dark. It is a woman who got tired of being unfinished and chose the person she wanted looking. A late office. A back row. A road with the city falling away. She knew where they were going. She said so with her mouth, and then she said so with everything else.
