In this issue (June 2026, Issue 100):
The hundredth issue, and Yumi quietly slipped the number 百 into as many corners of it as she could get away with. A beginner story about an elementary school turning 100. An etymology piece on 百聞は一見にしかず. A Takahama Kyoshi haiku in which one hundred camellias multiply into three hundred in the heat shimmer. Frank finally lands a job in Season 3, Episode 8. Beginner Reader: 小学校100年の思い出 (My Elementary School's 100th Year)
A third-grader's elementary school turns 100. A commemorative book is being put together to mark the occasion, and the Yumi's composition is chosen to go in it. Family and neighbors are full of praise. But there's something about the whole thing that only Yumi knows — and won't quite say out loud. Presented in hiragana-spaced, kanji+furigana, and natural formats.

Frank & The Obaasan: Season 3, Episode 8 「Talking is my Job」
Frank has a job. The bow is, as always, a problem. The regulars seem to love him anyway. And somewhere in an episode that mostly involves Frank slamming his head into things, someone says one quiet line that catches him completely off guard. Includes structured Japanese, vocabulary and grammar support, and a Japanese-only reading.

Japanese Reader: 四谷怪談 (Yotsuya Kaidan)

Yumi's Dedication: 100号に寄せて — a short letter from Yumi marking the milestone, in full Japanese with a line-by-line English breakdown. Etymology: 百聞は一見にしかず — the proverb's origin in the Book of Han, and how it differs from "a picture is worth a thousand words." Haiku Spotlight: Takahama Kyoshi — a haiku in which 100 camellias multiply into 300. Quite possibly the most accidentally appropriate haiku we could have run in issue 100. Onomatopoeia: ふにゃふにゃ, もちもち, とろとろ — three flavors of soft that English keeps trying to flatten into "squishy." Grammar Time: 〜てもいい (N5) and 〜わけではない (N2) — permission and softened denial. Vocabulary: N5 through N1 — five everyday phrases, one for each JLPT level. Kanji Spotlight: 本, 親, 捨, 依, 矛 — readings, meanings, stroke order, and example words. Prefecture Spotlight: 新潟 (Niigata) — rice country, sake country, snow country. Anime Phrase: From 『野原ひろし 昼メシの流儀』, the Crayon Shin-chan spin-off about Hiroshi's heroic devotion to his lunch break.
