At eighteen, she was signed over in marriage by a father who knew precisely what he was handing her to, in a country where a wife remained a legal minor for life, unable to open a bank account or sign a contract without a man's name beside her own. What followed was twelve years of charm and terror on a farm in the Valley of a Thousand Hills. An escape. A second marriage that broke something that could not be mended. And a third that was tender and true, and not what she believed it was.

A mother who could not save her - and the reason why, which took forty years to understand. Two cancers, one diagnosed on her fortieth birthday. A country that measured her body and sent her away. And, at a kitchen table in the middle of the night, one line written in a cheap notebook - a question that evolved into her life's work.

This is a memoir about resilience as it is actually lived: not a trait some people are born with, but something assembled slowly out of ordinary days, bad decisions, small acts and stubborn hope. It is unflinching about violence, grief and institutional failure - and it is genuinely funny, often on the same page.
