Matteo Rinaldi returns to Bologna for one reason: to close the restaurant his father left behind.

Da Carlo has never felt like an inheritance he wanted.

For most of Matteo's life, the small neighborhood trattoria stood between him and his father. Carlo was always there—preparing lunch, feeding customers, keeping the kitchen running. To Matteo, his father often seemed to have more patience for the people who sat at his tables than for the family waiting at home.

So after Carlo's death, Matteo plans to empty the refrigerator, sort through the old equipment, take down the sign, and return to his life in Milan.

Then the regulars begin to arrive.

One remembers Carlo's minestrone.

Another remembers sausage and onions.

Someone remembers pasta e fagioli as rich, salty, and filling. Someone else insists it was light and gentle.

And someone remembers a simple bowl of broth that never appeared on the menu at all.

Matteo searches the kitchen for answers.

He finds worn pots, blackened pans, old ladles, receipts, supplier cards, and notebooks filled with names and cryptic reminders.

But there are no recipes.

Not one.

So Matteo begins trying to recreate his father's food from memory—other people's memories.

That quickly creates another problem.

The memories do not agree.

One person remembers a dish as sweet. Another insists it was never sweet. One remembers a soup as rich and heavy, while another remembers something completely different.

At first, Matteo assumes someone must be wrong.

But the deeper he goes into Carlo's kitchen, the more another possibility begins to emerge.

Perhaps Carlo never cooked exactly the same dish for everyone.

Perhaps the food changed with the season, the ingredients available that day, and most importantly, the person sitting at the table.

As Matteo follows those memories through minestrone, sausage and onions, frittata, pasta e fagioli, and dishes that never appeared on the menu, his notes begin filling with something other than measurements.

Names.

Preferences.

Illnesses.

People.

And with every new discovery comes a more difficult question.

If Carlo could pay such close attention to everyone else, why had that same tenderness been so difficult for him to show at home?

Set in a small neighborhood trattoria in Bologna, My Father's Restaurant Had No Recipes is a quiet, character-driven story about food, memory, grief, family, and the complicated ways people care for one another.

Part One of Two.
