A newborn baby is left at a Bakersfield, California, fire station with a note pinned to his blanket. It reads, "My name is Jimmy." He is adopted and allowed to keep the name he came with. Jimmy grows up in a loving family. He lives through a devastating earthquake, survives a tour in Vietnam, brings his best friend's body home from the war, and joins the Kern County Sheriff's Office. As a deputy sheriff, Jimmy and his partner must deal with the violent strike in a small town in the Mojave Desert. After it is resolved, Jimmy is called to an accident where he finds his partner dead. When Jimmy is promoted to homicide detective, he is faced with scenes of murder victims seared in his memory, but one will affect him in a more personal way.
