Nihilism Is God - G. J. Jackson

Belief doesn't usually collapse all at once. More often it just stops holding weight. You're driving home, or standing in a grocery store line, or half listening in a meeting, and something you've believed for years suddenly feels thin. Then the question shows up uninvited: what if none of this means what I thought it did?

That's where this book starts.

Nihilism has a reputation it mostly doesn't deserve. Say the word and people picture apathy, cruelty, someone using "nothing matters" as an excuse. That version is real, but it's a caricature of something older and more serious: a genuine confrontation with meaning, morality, and authority. Are moral rules discovered, or did we invent them and forget we did? Does life need permission from outside itself in order to matter? What happens to a person, or a whole culture, once the old answers stop convincing anyone?

The book follows that thread from ancient skepticism through nineteenth century Russia, where nihilism went from philosophy to political movement, into Nietzsche's death of God and his distinction between active and passive nihilism, the difference between clearing ground and simply giving up. From there it moves into what came after: existentialism, absurdism, religious doubt, political fanaticism, consumer culture, social media, and the modern habit of turning a purchase, a career, or a personal wound into an identity that thinks it matters cosmically.

None of this gets treated as harmless. Losing certainty can burn away comfortable lies, but it burns away restraint just as easily. People don't automatically get wiser when the old rules stop applying. Sometimes they just get numb, or cruel, or they trade one inherited faith for another and call the new one freedom. A career becomes a religion. A relationship becomes a stand in for a whole identity. An institution gets called sacred mainly because nobody is willing to ask what it's actually for. The void rarely stays empty for long, and whatever rushes in to fill it isn't automatically an improvement. A comforting story can waste a life just as thoroughly as no story at all.

So the book asks the harder questions directly. Can love mean anything without destiny behind it? Can morality survive without a divine author? Can a life matter to the person living it even if the universe doesn't care either way? Is meaning worth less because you chose it instead of finding it waiting for you?

It won't hand you an answer, and it won't dress the void up as secretly beautiful or turn uncertainty into a slogan. What it offers instead is plainer, and more useful: life may not need cosmic approval to count. Meaning doesn't have to be permanent to be real. And the things you actually choose to care about get more honest once you stop pretending someone else assigned them to you.

Nihilism Is God is part history, part argument, part quiet dismantling of how this idea has been misused, and an honest accounting of what's still standing once borrowed certainty runs out. It may not tell you what your life means. But it might help you spot who's been trying to answer that question on your behalf.
