Mona is forty-three. She's been doing the work for twenty-five years — six thousand rooms, six dead women whose names she carries in her body, and a question that's been getting louder for months: how much longer?

Every Thursday night, she leads a support group in the basement of Greater Mount Calvary Baptist Church on the South Side of Chicago. Eight women in folding chairs. Folgers coffee. A ritual: they say the names of the dead. Frankie. Diamond. La La. Coco. Tamara. Keisha. The names rise to the fluorescent lights and come back down like rain. The names are the carrying. The carrying is the point.

OLD TESTAMENT moves between the present — the group, the women, the slow gravitational pull toward a decision — and the past, where each name becomes a chapter: a flashback to the woman, the life, the death, the specific body part where Mona carries her. Frankie in the chest. Diamond in the hands. Keisha in the eyes.

In the present, the living need her too. A young woman who needs a clinic. A comedian turning truth into ministry. A pregnant woman finding God. A mother who finally says her daughter's name correctly. And Mercedes — always Mercedes — who is building something on Pulaski Avenue that might be the other side.

The question is not whether Mona will stop. The question is what stopping looks like when the work is the only life you've known, when the body that does the work is the body you built from beauty-shop hormones and kitchen-table silicone, and when the women you carry are the women who taught you to survive.

OLD TESTAMENT is the final novel in the Posted Up series — five standalone novels about Black and Latina trans women in Chicago, connected by community, survival, and the refusal to disappear. This is the last voice. This is the testament.
