PLANET PLASTIC Tiny Plastics, Big Questions — and How We Can Protect People, Animals, and Our World

When I began my career in materials science more than forty years ago, plastic was one of our proudest inventions. It kept food fresh, made cars lighter and hospitals safer, and put clean, affordable tools into billions of hands. I spent decades studying how materials are made, how they behave, and how they age — and for most of that time, almost nobody asked what happens to a plastic bottle a century after we throw it away.

Today we know the answer, and it is one of the great science stories of our time. Plastic does not disappear. It breaks into smaller and smaller pieces — microplastics and nanoplastics — that drift on the wind, ride the rivers, settle on mountaintops, and have now been detected in our food, our water, and even inside the human body.

That last sentence can sound frightening. This book was written so that it does not have to be.

I wrote *Planet Plastic* for young readers because they deserve two things at once: the honest truth and a calm guide. Every chapter keeps a promise that real scientists keep every day — *finding* something is not the same as *proving* it causes harm. Detection and disease are different questions, and this book is careful to keep them apart. Where the evidence is established, I say so. Where it is still emerging, I say that too. And where the honest answer is "scientists are still working on it," young readers will find those exact words — because learning to live with an open question is one of the most valuable skills science can teach.

Most of all, this book is an invitation. The microplastics story is not finished, and the people who will write its next chapters — as researchers, engineers, voters, inventors, and everyday problem-solvers — are the readers holding this book. My greatest hope is that they close the final page feeling not afraid of the problem, but ready for it.
