The Ohio Valley is a graveyard of biological rot. After the Blight turned traditional livestock into toxic slurry, humanity turned inward. Now, the Cinder-Gorge Nursery supplies the masses, growing "Special Meat" in subterranean vats where human geometry is twisted into high-yield commodities.

Marcus Thorne is a Senior Sculptor. He doesn't see people; he sees marbling, fat-caps, and tallow. He is a master of industrial efficiency, but he harbors a private hunger the Nursery cannot satisfy.

When a genetic glitch produces a "Throwback"—a specimen of symmetrical, high-resolution beauty named Grace—Marcus doesn't report the defect. He steals it. Retreating into the unmapped guts of the Executive Sub-Levels, Marcus attempts to stabilize his prize in a world of ozone and flickering blue light.
