The story follows Myah O'Brien, a marine biologist working on a NASA grant to study the effects of red tides in the Banana River near Port Canaveral, Florida. Her supervisor, Ky McDonald, unexpectedly presents her with compelling evidence of past life on Mars and invites her to join an expedition from Mars Colony 1-a mining outpost on the Red Planet-into the Martian frontier in search of past life.
In this future, space tourism has become commonplace. Myah begins her journey aboard a commercial cruise ship traveling from Earth to lunar orbit, followed by a shuttle descent to Armstrong City, a bustling lunar colony. The Moon has adopted an anything-goes reputation for tourists, proudly promoting the idea that "what happens on the far side, stays on the far side." After completing medical evaluations and provisioning for the journey to Mars-including the assignment of a mischievous Al-enabled spacesuit. Myah boards a transport carrying supplies to the Martian colony.
While Myah is away, Earth is gripped by the outbreak of the third great pandemic of the 21st century. On Mars, she uncovers a secret that may hold the key to a cure. At the same time, she discovers that life on the Martian frontier offers far more than she ever expected, especially when it comes to her complex relation-ship with Ky, who is not only her superior, but has become something more.
