Roger and Melanie meet at university. She is outgoing, confident and decisive. He is not. Chalk and cheese, their friends say. Despite their different temperaments – or perhaps because of them – they become lovers. When Melanie inherits her parents' house they move into it together.
To avoid constant arguments about housework Roger offers to be Melanie's slave for one day every two weeks. That works well for both of them, and when invited to a fancy dress party they go as Dominatrix and Slave.

The book chronicles Roger's adventures as a hired slave, moving through an unfamiliar sexual landscape; and also what happens at home when Melanie acquires a second slave – a strong-willed young woman.
