Most of us have felt it before, even if we never had a word for it. A moment on a clifftop when the line between you and the sea seemed to dissolve. A strange spaciousness that opens in the small hours when the city sleeps. The sudden, unaccountable rightness of watching a child lost in play. The Japanese call this satori, the flash of intuitive insight in which the felt separation between you and everything else falls away, and something larger and calmer looks out through your eyes. Christian mystics called it union. Sufis called it fana. Hindu sages called it samadhi. Abraham Maslow, hunting for the common thread in the lives of the most fulfilled people he could find, had to invent a clinical name for it: the peak experience. Different vocabularies, the same door.

Satori Now, now in its third edition, is David Tuffley's guide to finding that door on purpose, and eventually learning to live with it open. This is not a book that asks you to renounce the world, delete your accounts, or retreat to a cave. The cave you need, Tuffley argues, is interior, and you can carry it with you onto a crowded train. What the book does ask is that you notice what is actually happening in your own mind: the restless, comparing, ever-dissatisfied churn of the egoic self, magnified now by devices engineered specifically to hijack your attention and sell it back to you in fragments. In an age built to scatter the mind, Tuffley makes the case that the simple act of resting your attention where you choose to place it has become a quiet form of rebellion, and the beginning of everything else in this book.

From there the book moves through the ground a genuine practice needs: living fully in the present rather than the half-life of regret and rehearsal most of us mistake for living; the workings of intuition, and why it reaches truths the analytical mind cannot; a clear, undogmatic introduction to Zen meditation, offered as a toolkit rather than an orthodoxy; the clarifying pleasure of real communion with the natural world; the essential ideas of Buddhism and Taoism that underlie Zen, explained without jargon; and the use of koans, those small, deliberately unsolvable riddles Zen has used for centuries to shake the rational mind loose from its own certainties. Each chapter closes with guided practices you can take straight into your day.

Tuffley writes as a scholar of comparative religion and a long-time Zen practitioner, with the plain, unhurried authority of someone who has done the work himself and has no interest in mystifying it further. There is no dogma here, no claim that this is the only road up the mountain, only a clear account of one path that leads to the summit others have called by different names in different centuries. Whoever you are, wherever you live, whatever you have or have not accomplished, if you are willing to put in the effort, this book will show you the way in. The destination, as Tuffley admits by the final page, was never really the point. There is only the walking, the noticing, and the gentle return each time the mind wanders off. Satori Now is where that walking begins.
