Aquinas' relationship with the Holy Scriptures was one of reverence and intellectual rigor. Unlike some theologians of his time who approached Scripture allegorically or mystically, Aquinas insisted on a careful distinction between the literal and spiritual senses of the text. He held that the literal sense, properly understood, provided the foundation upon which all other interpretations must rest. This approach was deeply influenced by St. Augustine, whose De Doctrina Christiana had laid out principles for biblical interpretation, and by St. Jerome, the great translator of the Latin Vulgate. However, Aquinas went further, incorporating Aristotelian logic into his exegesis, ensuring that Scripture was read with both a theological and philosophical lens.
