Thirteen-year-old Juni Monroe has a plan for her summer: rehearsals, a music showcase, and the trio spot that could change everything. Instead, she's sent three hours south to Riverbend, Missouri, to look after the grandfather she barely knows - Roland "Rollie Blue" Monroe, a jazz trumpeter whose memory is beginning to come apart.
The town is slow, the piano is out of tune, and her grandfather leaves notes to himself on the refrigerator. But when Juni sits down and plays the songs he loves, the fog lifts - for a verse, a chorus, a whole afternoon. Music reaches the places words can't. So she starts a notebook: a map of which songs open which doors, and a hunt for a lost 1968 recording with one missing name that her grandfather can no longer summon.
Told in Juni's wry, tender voice, Stardust in July is a story about caregiving, first losses, and the strange grace of loving someone through a long goodbye - about the people who learn to keep the beat when the melody won't hold. For readers ages 9 to 13, and anyone who has ever tried to hold on to someone who is slipping away.
