Stoicism for the Modern Soul - Thirty Stories of Wisdom, Courage & the Art of Living Well Inspired by the teachings of Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius & Seneca
Stoicism began in a painted porch in Athens around 300 BCE. It was not born in a palace or a university but in an open colonnade where anyone could listen — merchant, slave, senator, or child passing on an errand.
Its core insight was both radical and obvious: most of what causes human suffering is not what happens to us but how we interpret what happens to us. And interpretation — unlike weather, illness, or the decisions of other people — is something we can actually work on.
This book tells thirty stories. Some are set in ancient Greece and Rome. Some in unnamed places that feel closer to yesterday. All of them circle the same territory: how to meet difficulty with dignity, how to appreciate what is already here, how to become — gradually, imperfectly, repeatedly — the person you intended to be.
The characters in these stories are not perfect. The philosophers they quote were not perfect either — Seneca was enormously wealthy while writing about simplicity; Marcus Aurelius conducted wars while writing about peace. Stoicism has never been about perfection. It has always been about the practice.
