The sound of the enemy’s screws slowed. The crew could hear the splash of a depth charge hitting the water. #3 The Tang was hit by depth charges, but still managed to make it to safety. The crew was extremely relieved that the worst was over. #4 The Tang returned to Pearl Harbor, and as was customary, the chief quartermaster, Jones, went to a locker under the chart desk and pulled out the battle flag. He then climbed to the bridge of the submarine and raised the flag until it fluttered for all to see.
