Many practitioners find it indispensable in the treatment of neuroses, while others dispute the value of dream-analysis and believe that dreams are a negligible by-product of the psyche. #2 Dreams can be used to reveal the unconscious causes of a neurosis. The Freudian answer is that dreams often reveal the unconscious contents that are causal factors in a neurosis. #3 The dream is a accurate representation of the patient’s subjective state, which the conscious mind denies exists or recognizes only grudgingly. The patient’s conscious ego could see no reason why he should not go steadily forward, but the dream showed us how things really stood. #4 There are dreams that explain the causes of a neurosis, and there are others that do not. The point is that there are neuroses whose origins we discover only at the end of an analysis, and there are others whose origins we do not need to discover.
