Instead of exploiting His fame, He began to emphasize the very things that made His message so controversial. #2 The process of choosing and calling the Twelve apostles happened in distinct stages. Christ chose them before they chose Him, and he invested most of his energies in them. #3 The Twelve were chosen by Christ to be his apostles. They were sent out two by two, and Christ stayed with them to support them. They were constantly checking in with Christ, and after a couple of seasons of evangelistic labor, they returned to Christ and remained with Him for an extended time of teaching, ministry, and fellowship. #4 The timing of this event is significant. Luke notes this with his opening phrase in Luke 6:12: Now it came to pass in those days, which refers to a period of time when the opposition to Jesus peaked. Jesus knew that His earthly ministry would have to be handed off to someone else, so He chose twelve apostles.
