Sample Book Insights: #1 The Bretton Woods conference was held in 1944 and was responsible for creating the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The Americans were in charge of the Allied side of the war, and they were the only ones who wanted these institutions. #2 The Americans had a navy that was the most powerful in the world after the Nazis and the Japanese were defeated, and the British had no navy at all.
